T.G. Green & Co. Ltd (Cornishware) are recruiting for a ceramic caster apprentice. This role involves pouring liquid clay (slip) into plaster mould to form various ceramics products, monitoring filling process and handling the resulting cast items through drying and demoulding. Cast items will require fettling, which involves removing seams and all other imperfections.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Preparing and mixing slip: mixing clay and water to create the liquid clay (slip) according to specific formulations.
  • Pouring Slip into Moulds: pouring the slip into moulds to form the desired shapes, often in a repetitive process.
  • Monitoring mould Filling: ensuring the correct amount and thickness of slip is poured into the mould to prevent defects.
  • Handling Demoulding: Carefully removing the cast items from the moulds to avoid breakage or damage.
  • Drying and Placement: placing cast items on drying racks or dryer shelves
    Inspecting and Touch-up: inspecting the cast items for imperfections and performing minor touch- ups.
  • Maintaining Moulds: Keeping moulds clean, dry and in good working condition.
  • Record keeping: Recording production data and reporting any issues to supervisor.
  • Assisting with cleaning and maintenance: assisting in cleaning the work area and maintaining tools and equipment
