About

The Garage Press was founded in a garage in Upper Sydenham in 2018 as a side-project by Literary Agent Simon Trewin. Born out of a lifelong passion for print and design, and fuelled by a family of journalists and authors, Simon bought a small vintage printing press and a box of type.

‘Like all good hobbies it soon outgrew the garage and moved to an artist studio in Brixton where I soon amassed a huge collection of presses, illustration blocks and thousand of pieces of wooden and metal type. I swiftly became a Trustee of The National Type Archive in Stockwell and joined the Executive Council of The British Printing Society and quickly realised that in this digital world there was actually an almost-hidden thirst for learning about hands-on analog crafts and my one-man hobby soon became a world of creative collaboration with everyone from the National Archives At Kew to Penguin Random House and also saw me starting to run Letterpress workshops for the likes of Analog Sea, Camp Wildfire and, of course, Bell House in Dulwich Village.  During Lockdown I even ran workshops online and began to hold inky hands across the sea with letterpress printers as far apart as in Poland and in Nova Scotia'

We moved into a converted 18th century stable block in the educational trust Bell House in Dulwich Village in 2022 where we continue to get inky but we are also now co-founders of the Bell House Print Room and Bindery with Tania Hurt-Newton in the basements of the original Georgian house where we are budy running workshops and encouraging hands-on visitors at an always-Open Studio.
