About
Since the early 1990s, Steve Lee has specialised in engraved glass portraiture.
Alongside traditional drill engraving, he primarily works in stipple engraving, a meticulous technique in which each image is formed from thousands of tiny dots. Every mark is individually tapped into the glass using a single solitaire diamond.
Borrowing a description from the late great stipple engraver Sir Lawrence Whistler, Steve describes stipple engraving as “painting with light.” As the dots build, light refracts and reflects through the glass, gradually revealing depth, tone, and expression.
Steve is based in Cornwall and regularly undertakes commissions internationally, but mostly Steve engraves for the simple joy of engraving.
