Endangered Crafts Fund 2023
Scot AnSgeulaiche, a Highland thatcher from Perthshire, was awarded the Endangered Crafts Fund 2023, and was selected with special consideration of the impact of the energy crisis on our most vulnerable crafts. Scot will train an apprentice in the craft of Highlands and Islands thatching and encourage the use of locally-grown thatching materials.
About
I am one of the few practitioners of the thatching styles found on the "Celtic fringe" of the Scottish Highlands, the Western Isles, Ireland and the islands in between. I only use traditional materials and fixing techniques and I'm particularly devoted to buildings of historical value. I do sometimes get called to do reed thatching, which is a Lowland style.
