About
Lettercarving is the craft of shaping language into stone. It begins with drawing—understanding the balance, weight, and proportion of each letter—then moves into cutting, where the line is given depth and permanence. Using hammer and chisel, each stroke is carved as a controlled V-cut, formed from both sides so that light and shadow bring the letter to life.
I grew up in a cemetery and learned my craft from a monumental sculptor. From those beginnings, lettercarving and sculpture became my life’s work. I have travelled widely through my craft, designing and carving memorials, and taking part in the conservation and restoration of war memorials. I also create sculpture in both wood and stone for families, communities, and public spaces.
Working by hand, I follow the same principles of line, form, and rhythm across all materials. As a member of the Master Letter Carvers Association, I am committed to the promotion and preservation of this endangered craft. Alongside my practical work, I hold an MSc in Building Surveying, using traditional techniques to help maintain and protect our heritage buildings, ensuring the knowledge and skills of the past continue into the future.
