About

The road to Aluminiumart

From Bugattis to Butterflies
Matthew started crafting whilst teaching and wanted to use his skills learnt prior to teaching. He started making boat planters with a wheeling machine and when he heard his mum was tired of buying a wreath each year he was determined to make one for her that would last a lifetime. When he made his first prototype she was not too impressed as it would not suit her 500 year old house (far too contemporary) so they developed the table decoration which was displayed proudly on her dining room table all year round (not just for Christmas).
Further products have developed as a result of people coming with requests and ideas. Today he combines skills from old and new to create unique and beautiful pieces.
Having spent 13 years as a secondary school teacher, latterly part time, he was been able to build up my product range. Having spent his last year mainly teaching food technology, it became an easy decision to go into full time making aluminium products. Working from his studio from the heart of the National Forrest, Ashby de la Zouch, he creates pieces of craft and art for all to enjoy.

The road to Aluminiumart

From Bugattis to Butterflies
Matthew’s first job was a coachbuilder in the late 80’s making body panels from scratch for Bugattis, Rolls Royce etc. This lead onto creating Aston Martin , Rolls Royce and MG prototypes in the early to mid 90’s. He then moved to Quality Engineering at Toyota in a mass production environment.  Involved with prototype vehicles and engineered parts he gained valuable skills along the way.

Matthew takes pleasure in working with aluminium due to its longevity; maintaining its original colour and beauty as it ages. He makes decorative small pieces, outdoor ornaments and also accept commissions. All items can be personalised and is happy to discuss any requirements you may have in order to bring your ideas to life.
