About
I am a Textile Artist whose work is inspired by the legend, landscape and people of Wales. I hold an MA in Contemporary Crafts as well as a BA(Hons) and B.Ed, in both of which I studied Textile Art. I use a range of traditional needlecraft techniques to make wall hangings and mixed media art maps. I began making dolls as part of Creative Textiles course with the Open College of Arts. I am interested in the way in which doll-making has been used through history by women as a form of personal expression, as a tool for communication, influence or negotiation and as a way to contemplate the spiritual or ethereal. I hand make art dolls which fall into the category of 'Objects of Power' - crafted representations of folkloric or imagined beings that navigate and narrate the human experience. I am currently researching the ways in which dolls can be made for use in transformative and healing encounters. I am a craftivist and I make cloth dolls which illustrate present day social and cultural issues - these are known as Protest Dolls and are often exhibited at venues in South Wales. I do not make dolls as toys or playthings. Most of my creative work is produced with exhibition in mind but I do occasionally take part in events with other makers or appear as an artist in residence.
