About
Marchesi di Montecristi is a UK-based artisan practice dedicated to the preservation and continuation of Montecristi straw hat weaving, a highly skilled craft from Ecuador that is now at serious risk of disappearing. Founded by Maria Jose Incisa di Camerana, whose family has been part of this tradition for over 45 years, the practice works closely with master artisans to support fair, sustainable livelihoods while safeguarding exceptional hand-weaving knowledge.
Maria Jose studied Fashion Design at the University of the Arts London, where she developed a design approach rooted in material understanding, longevity, and responsible making. Her work brings together contemporary design sensibility and traditional techniques, using natural materials to create pieces that are both relevant to modern life and grounded in timeless craft values. She approaches heritage craft as a living practice that must evolve thoughtfully while remaining faithful to its origins, ensuring these skills remain visible, valued, and economically viable.
Through ethical collaboration, public engagement, knowledge sharing, and participation in craft-led initiatives, Marchesi di Montecristi actively contributes to the UK craft landscape, raising awareness of endangered craft skills and championing heritage craftsmanship as a vital, living tradition for future generations.
