About

I am Ludivine Brouillet, a French violin maker based in Newark-on-Trent, UK.

I trained at the Newark School of Violin Making, graduating in 2020 with a particular focus on the Cremonese tradition of violin making. During my studies, I was awarded the Colin Garrett Prize and became a laureate of the Marcel-Bleustein Blanchet Foundation, receiving a bursary in support of my work in cello making.

Since graduating, I have continued to develop my practice through work in specialist workshops in the UK and Europe, alongside my own workshop. I make violins, violas and cellos, and undertake repairs, restoration and instrument set-up.

My work is firmly rooted in traditional making methods. I am particularly interested in the relationship between the structure, materials and sound of an instrument, and in the small details of construction that give each instrument its own character. I work carefully with the wood, varnish and proportions of each instrument, seeking a balance between traditional principles and the individual qualities of the finished instrument.

Alongside my own making, I teach violin making at the Newark School of Musical Instrument Crafts, where I share practical workshop knowledge and traditional techniques with the next generation of makers.

My workshop practice brings together new instrument making and the care of existing instruments. Whether creating a new violin from carefully selected materials or restoring an older instrument with its own history, I approach the work with patience, precision and respect for the instrument and its individuality.
