About
Kintsugi is the traditional Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics using urushi (natural lacquer) and precious metals. It is a slow, multi-stage process that honors an object's history by making the repair visible rather than hiding it. My practice is rooted in these traditional methods, focusing on the structural and aesthetic integrity of the urushi process, which requires patience and a deep understanding of the material’s curing properties.
While my work began with the repair of ceramics, my practice is evolving into broader experimentation with lacquer work as a medium itself. This involves using traditional urushi techniques to explore new surfaces and forms, moving beyond functional repair into contemporary lacquer craft. Through this exploration, I aim to keep these heritage skills alive while pushing the boundaries of how traditional lacquer can be applied today.
