About

Joined, carved, furniture from riven, green oak using hand tools. 16th and 17th century methods. Traditional and new surface designs. Architectural carving. Conservation carpentry. Riving timber to make things is the oldest form of woodworking in the British Isles. The earliest extant evidence is from Star Carr, Yorkshire, a mesolithic site which was in use shortly after the last ice age, 10.5 to 11.5 thousand years ago. Coincidentally, where my family is from. I love the elemental nature of taking a tree, and converting it, using the same methods those mesolithic peoples were using then, albeit with steel wedges and axes, not flint ones. It connects me to my ancestry and heritage, although I practise my craft now, in Devon, not Yorkshire! Enquiries welcome for courses. Come and learn this age old craft. Joined Oak Chest from a Log course. Bowl-carving course. Taster One-day Carve a Flower Course.
