About

Joanne Dawson, originally from South Yorkshire and now based in Glasgow, works across tile, mosaic and architectural ceramics. Her work investigates how design enhances our experience of the built environment through strategic use of decorative arts, pattern and ornamentation.

Joanne’s work possesses a duality of form and function, sitting within a lineage of making that is informed by historic craft practices and vernacular building construction. She enacts the role of artist, maker and installer - historically different trades - to deliver work which is broadly accessible to all. A prime example of public craft, Glasgow’s colloquially named ‘wally close’ tenement entranceways provide a fitting backdrop to her work, in that the traditional arts can be for everyone.

Joanne uses traditional techniques and materials such as slip casting, mosaic and stoneware. Her work implements a visual language that combines recurring symbols and motifs, taking inspiration from organic and colourful forms found in the world around her. She translates drawing, stencilling and pattern making into tiles, mosaic and other three dimensional forms.

Joanne trained in Painting and Printmaking at The Glasgow School of Art and later participated on the Building Arts Programme at Dumfries House in 2022 through The Kings Foundation and Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST), where she worked with Craven Dunnill Jackfield, Bulmer Brick and Tiles and The Mosaic Restoration Co. at Manchester Town Hall.

Public commissions include functional artworks for ‘Tramway Beyond Walls’ project for Glasgow City Council; Paisley Tiled Entrance / Live Build in partnership with The Kings Foundation, Sculpture House, Paisley and Queen’s Park Mural sponsered by Johnson Tiles. She has exhibited work at Edinburgh Art Festival and National Trust for Scotland’s Holmwood House amongst more. Joanne received the Dewar Art Award in 2016 and Inches Carr Graduate Craft Award in 2017 and more recently received funding from The Hope Scott Trust for research and development of her work.
