About
I make hand felted textiles for interiors and to wear with surfaces that invite physical interaction with the materials and challenge the perception of felt.
Taking an experimental approach to the ancient craft of felt making, I explore material combinations and processes, to celebrate tactility in my work. Driven by a desire to create texture and engage the senses, my work reflects an interest in haptic perception - our instinct to touch and the importance of this sense to our human experience.
Using environmentally friendly, high quality natural materials, I individually designs and hand craft each piece of felt from wool, silk and wood sourced from environmentally responsible suppliers and farms. Recently I have been exploring felt rug making with sheep fleeces, helping to foster environmentally friendly and sustainable making alongside supporting UK farmers achieve value for their fleeces. My work is largely creating in limited edition collections or made to order, and I welcome commissions.
With a background in arts and education, I combine teaching felt making and textiles with running my design label, Silversoles. I began working with felt in 1997 and established Silversoles in 2000. I hold an MA in Textiles & Surface Design with Distinction when I developed ways of combining devore with feltmaking. I am a member of the International Feltmakers Association and a regional coordinator for the West Midlands region.
