About
Lander & May are traditional, artisan globe makers.
OUR MAKING METHOD
We make globe using time-honoured techniques and materials: making our globe spheres from papier mache and plaster, then hand applying printed map 'gores'. Some of our map artwork is printed in black and white and then hand tinted.
OUR NOD TO MODERNITY
We have to hold a large digital map archive, for maps both historic and contemporary. For our historical range, we are then able to print out facsimile map artwork. For our contemporary range, we constantly update with any revisions to borders and name changes.
GREEN CREDENTIALS
We source all of our components from within the UK, so our materials do not have to travel far, and we use a local wood turner to make our stands.
We make our globes in a workshop on a small industrial park, which is nestled in a leafy idyll on the beautiful Isle of Wight. We heat our workshop in the winter using a woodburner that uses sawdust for fuel, which we obtain from our neighbour - the woodturner who makes our stands.
