Derwent Harps: Preserving the Art of the Harp
“The celebrated Joseph Haydn in a conversation with Mr Sebastian
Erard observed that most instruments touched the ear only, but the harp
touched the heart”
Since 2011, Derwent Harps has been dedicated to the fine art of harp manufacturing in the heart of Wales. As one of the few remaining active harp makers in the United Kingdom, we pride ourselves on blending traditional lutherie with a modern mission to make this magical instrument accessible to everyone.
Every Derwent harp made by our master harp maker Paul—from the portable Discovery 16 to our Explorer 34 lever harp is handcrafted. Our craftsmanship is rooted in a deep respect for the instrument's history, combined with innovative design and use of technology that ensures durability and playability for the modern musician.
Under the direction of Helen-Elizabeth—Head of Harp at the International School of Musicians—Derwent Harps serves as a cornerstone of the British harp community. Beyond manufacturing, we are committed to the "living heritage" of the instrument. Through our Discover The Harp workshops, Silver Strings groups, one to one harp lessons (online and in person), our Discover The Harp at Sea enrichment programme and OFQUAL-accredited harp exams, we ensure that the skills required to both build and play the harp are passed down to future generations.
At Derwent Harps, we aren't just building instruments; we are keeping the legacy of Welsh and British harp making alive, ensuring that the "heart-touching" sound of the harp continues to resonate worldwide.
