Heritage Crafts/Marsh ‘Made in Britain’ Award 2014
Yvette was called ‘an ambassador of hat making’ by her proposer. She specialises in hand blocking and hat making, and is based in the Scottish Borders.
Using all British-produced materials, much of it from Yorkshire and Scotland, Yvette creates unique hats, with the fabrics moulded by steam and all the trimmings made by hand. She trained in Luton, home of hats, and went on to work with the milliner Graham Smith.
About
All of my hats and headpieces are made using old fashioned millinery techniques and natural materials. Hats are hand-blocked at my home workrooms or at the museum giving me ultimate design control and quality over every piece. All of the pieces are hand-sewn and I find all of the trimmings myself from a wide range of natural and sustainable sources; such as friends with exotic birds vinatge and textile s from other craftspeople, the list is endless. I also try to avoid manmade materials as I find they date very quickly and do not have the same character as natural pieces."
I now take hatmaking lessons at Palace House museum in Newmarket as well as loan blocks to other would be hat makers Hat mkaing is on the Red List and its a passion to make more hatters than ever that can work from their own homes offering more choice to customers.
I want to set up an enviroment where people can come for residential courses and learn all sorts of crafts. To eat and drink together to help each other. To have a safe and beautiful place where others can come and purchase the crafts as well as see them been made.
