About

Pietra Dura is a very rare art form that involves hard stones and marbles. These are cut, inlaid and polished using traditional 16th Century techniques to create a mosaic that resembles a 'painting in stone'.

Fully developed during the Renaissance period under the Medici families in Florence it flourished throughout Europe and even workshops in the 19th Century in England.

Now there are very few left in Europe that still create Pietra Dura using the ancient Florentine techniques.
