About
Lucy Mayes (b. 1991) is an artist and pigment maker working in London and Portsmouth. Her work as ‘London Pigment’ uses urban waste stream materials to make recycled ecologically aware colours. Her knowledge of the technicalities of paint and pigment manufacture alongside European painting techniques has formed over time, within the context of two degrees in fine art painting at Oxford University and Royal College of Art. She previously worked for leading pigment retailer L. Cornelissen & Son in the capacity of pigment specialist for 4 years, testing pigments and working with their pigment archive. She has learnt pigment making techniques from esteemed pigment makers such as Keith Edwards and Dr Ruth Siddall amongst many others. She teaches pigment manufacturing techniques at The V&A, Kew gardens and other institutions. As a board member of non-profit Pigments Revealed International she is passionate about sharing knowledge of the craft of pigment making. Her pigments are sold internationally in the U.K and U.S and she regularly takes on bespoke colour commissions. By the end of 2024 she will have completed a commission from Royal Cornwall Museum to create a permanent display of the craft of pigment making.
