About
Epona Smith is a jewellery designer and hand engraver, who embraces history by incorporating ancient oriental culture into her artwork. By fusing traditional European techniques with her oriental culture background, Epona transforms traditional heirlooms into contemporary jewellery.
She embraces illustration as a form of therapy. Instead of telling her own stories, she also encourages her wearers to express themselves through bespoke, hand-engraved illustration and design. She believes the wearer can be healed through the process of telling their own stories.
By utilising traditional hand-push engraving and enamel technique, she engraves various textures ranging from velvet, silk, damask and motifs on metal pieces to imitate the concept and style of meticulous painting and embroidery. Her work integrates both European and Asian culture which emerge the possibility of new concept and redefine the storytelling and traditional culture.
The value of her works can be found in the quality of its craftsmanship. Hand engraving is one of the noblest art forms that has been treasured since antiquity. It has been used as a way to signify wealth and decorate items. Epona aims to preserve the traditions of hand engraving while creating contemporary pieces, reinventing this historic craft for the contemporary wearer.
