About

The Society of Scribes & Illuminators celebrated its Centenary in 2021. For 100 years it has supported and nurtured calligraphers and illuminators, encouraging interest and competence in these crafts. Although our members are predominantly from the United Kingdom, we also have members in 19 countries across four continents.

To promote and preserve the skills of calligraphy (fine writing) and illumination (decorative work involving painting and the use of gold leaf and other metals) the SSI runs courses in skills development and to enhance technical and design abilities. These are open to non-members in our efforts to widen our reach and further these skills. While there are healthy numbers of practitioners in calligraphy, illumination is in the Endangered category of the HCA’s Red List of Endangered Crafts and we acknowledge the special importance of nurturing craftspeople practising in this area.

A good proportion of our members are professionals, earning a living from taking commissions and teaching. Some of them work at the very top level, producing speciality and commemorative work for Royalty and civic occasions.
